This is about Persona 5 Royal. The red‑and‑black UI was so harsh on my eyes that it took me ages to get used to it, but I still pushed through all the way to the ending. Now I’m in the “post‑game reflection” phase.

Spoilers ahead.

After clearing Niijima’s Palace, you learn that the interrogation scene at the start of the game was actually part of the Phantom Thieves’ desperate plan. Joker intentionally let himself get arrested to outsmart Akechi and Shido’s faction. But once he actually got arrested, things went off-script—drugged, beaten, barely conscious—he almost failed the plan entirely. Only the player’s dialogue choices let him pull himself together and get back on track.

And I keep wondering: how much of that do the other Phantom Thieves actually understand?

There’s no scene where anyone explains to them just how bad things got. Joker went alone into enemy territory, nearly died, nearly ruined the entire operation, somehow saved it, and then quietly returned to Leblanc without telling anyone. If that whole sequence was meant to make the player feel Joker’s isolation and resolve, then ATLUS, well played.

Everyone at Leblanc greets Joker like, “Welcome back! You did it, leader!” But Morgana says, in that hardboiled tone, “I’m glad to see you again.” So I want to believe Morgana actually understands what Joker went through, what he fought against to make it back alive. Maybe that’s just my emotional headcanon, because the moment Morgana said that, I was already crying like “I’m glad to see you tooooo!!!”

Niijima Palace’s aftermath is such a brilliant double-layered moment: a flashy reversal of danger for the Phantom Thieves, and a quiet, crushing moment of Joker’s loneliness and determination for the player.

Another scene I love: Mishima shouting his love for the Phantom Thieves in the middle of Shibuya (his signature campaign). I used to think he was just a painfully overeager fanboy with a heavy dose of delusion and validation hunger, but that scene got me. Totally blindsided.

Challenge Battles. Yes, those existed.
I completely ignored the Velvet Room explanation early on and never remembered them again until the ending. So I had to replay Maruki’s Palace, rushed into the Velvet Room, and got exactly one Ali Dance skill card. Since you only get one, I couldn’t use it before duplicating it, so it’s now reserved for my next playthrough.

And considering this game took me over 100 hours for one run, I have no idea when that second playthrough will begin. But I’m looking forward to it.
